San Luis Obispo County Wine Country is one of the most popular wine tasting destinations in California. With over 200 wineries calling the region home, locals and tourists have more than 40 varietals crafted right here on the central coast to explore and enjoy from the beauty of vineyard tasting rooms.
San Luis Obispo County is broken down into four distinct American Viticulture Areas (or wine regions), each with their own unique climates and terroir profiles that result in world class varietals:
The Arroyo Grande Valley and Edna Valley wine regions were established in 1990 and 1982 respectively, and can be found in the southern half of San Luis Obispo County.
Vineyards in these regions produce the perfect Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs crafted with grapes grown closer to the coast, and often see cooler days during the growing season than the regions to the north.
The York Mountain AVA was established in 1982, but is actually one of the oldest and most well respected wine growing regions in all of SLO County. Nestled right up against the Paso Robles AVA, York Mountain shares a border with the Adelaida, Willow Creek, and Templeton Gap Districts in Paso Robles, but sees its own unique growing conditions located farther in the Santa Lucia Mountain Range.
The largest of the AVAs is Paso Robles. At roughly three times the size of Napa Valley’s AVA, Paso Robles’ AVA spans from San Miguel in the north to Santa Margarita in the south, and from Shandon in the east to the Santa Lucia Mountain Range in the west.
When the Paso Robles’ AVA was established in 1983, it was the largest single AVA in California at approximately 614,000 acres. In 2014 plans were approved to divide the AVA into eleven sub-districts, which include:
In addition to the four wine regions, San Luis Obispo County is also home to the Pacific Coast Wine Trail, which spans from Cambria to Cayucos in the northern half of the county. The trail is a collection of wineries that aren’t part of an AVA, but still an important part of the fabric that makes up San Luis Obispo County wine country.
