Red Scooter Deli isn’t your average deli shop. They might have sandwiches, salads, and soups on the menu, but the quality and variety of food you’ll get here is top notch. All of the sandwiches are made with locally baked breads and the freshest ingredients (which is also true for the wraps, soups, smoothies, and other baked goods on the menu), and there are dozens of options ranging from Turkey Clubs and Tuna Melts to Thai Tofu Wraps and Avocado Ruebens. The dream of owner Stephanie Johnston, Red Scooter Deli is a staple of northern SLO County, and a great stop for a quick bite, cup of coffee, or smoothie the next time you find yourself in Paso Robles.

THE MENU

The menu at Red Scooter Deli breaks down into three main categories: food, drinks, and catering.

The Food

Like all good delis Red Scooter offers a wide variety of sandwiches (hot and cold), all of which are made to order on local bread with the freshest ingredients. Unlike a lot of delis, Red Scooter has also put their twist on the sandwiches and created some amazingly delicious combinations. The “Cali-Cheesteak” for example is their version of the Philly Cheesesteak, but made with chipotle sauce on an Edna’s French Roll, and the “Avocado Reuben” is a vegan version of of the traditional Reuben sandwich on Hush Harbor Artisan Rye.

All of the sandwiches can be made on gluten free bread or as a wrap, but Red Scooter also has nine other wraps to choose from. These wraps span the culinary world with options like the Southwest, Thai Tofu, Lox, and Tuna Fricassee on the menu.

If salads are more to your liking, Red Scooter Deli also has 14 different options to choose from, and not always made of lettuce. There are definitely traditional options like the Garden and Caesar Salads, but Red Scooter also has options like the Mediterranean Salad with peppers, olives, and feta cheese, or the Thai Noodle Salad with rice noodles, tofu, and veggies tossed with a sesame peanut sauce.

Three soups are also made in-house every day at the deli, and are always gluten free. The Soup of the Day is always something different (but is always dairy-free, vegan, or vegetarian) where the vegan Roasted Tomato and vegetarian French Onion are available every day of the week.

One of the best parts about Red Scooter is that they also have breakfast options on their menu. Quick bites like scones, sticky buns, and yogurt granola bowls are available, but you can also find egg scrambles, sandwiches, and wraps to start your day off right.

On top of the vegan sandwich, wrap, salad, soup, and breakfast options, Red Scooter Deli also has a dedicated Vegan section menu with some new options and others pulled from different parts of the menu.

If your family is in tow when you visit Red Scooter, there is also a kid’s meal option on the menu. This allows your little one to choose between a half toasted cheese, pb&j, or meat & cheese sandwich, gogurt & fish crackers or a bag of kettle chips, and a drink!

The Drinks

In addition to all the delicious food at Red Scooter Deli, they also offer a full coffee and smoothie menu. Their coffees, teas, and lattes can all be served iced, hot, or blended, and range from the traditional drip coffee to the Honey Lavender Latte with dozens of other options in between. Red Scooter also serves Italian Sodas with 11 different flavors, as well as regular soda, tea, coconut and regular water, and juice.

The seven different smoothies on the menu at Red Scooter are all made with the freshest fruits, your choice of milk or juice, and ice with flavor combinations ranging from the Pina Colada to Beet-rific! The smoothies can also be made dairy free by request, and guests should note a few include Vanilla protein powder.

Catering

The catering menu at Red Scooter Deli is a combination of boxed lunches and platters. Options for boxed lunches pull from their existing menu of sandwiches and salads with gluten free and vegan options available by request. The platter options also include sandwiches and salads found on the existing menu, but cheese trays, deviled eggs, fresh vegetables, and finger sandwiches (along with other specialty items) are available.

THE EXPERIENCE

We have had the pleasure of eating Red Scooter Deli sandwiches and salads for years through a variety of work events they catered, and loved the food every single time. Although we haven’t tried all of their catering options, the boxed lunches, sandwiches platters, and salad bowls are always delicious and a big hit in our offices.

More recently we had the opportunity to visit Red Scooter Deli in Paso Robles, and actually have lunch at their location near Downtown City Park. The interior of the deli is not huge, but there is more than enough room to stand in line comfortably, and even tables for a few guests to eat inside. There is more seating outside of the deli, which works great for the beautiful weather we get here on the central coast.

The menu is displayed on three huge chalkboards just above the deli counter, and large enough to read while you’re in line. The only problem you might have is choosing between all the delicious options! Guests can choose to dine in at one of the tables, or get their order to go and picnic across the street at the park.

We wanted to try a variety of options when we visited, and landed on the B.L.A.T. (Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado, and Tomato) and Turkey-Bacon Melt Sandwiches (but without the bacon), the Thai Noodle Salad, Banana Nut Blast Smoothie, and Black Iced Tea.

The B.L.A.T. was one of the best we’ve ever had with thick cut bacon on sourdough, and the spice from the ortega chilies on the turkey bacon melt was just perfect. The Thai Noodle Salad, though, was the star of the show. The peanut sauce that covered the salad was so good, and we kind of wished  we had some to spread over everything. It also went really well with the Banana Nut Blast Smoothie, which you wouldn’t ordinarily think, but the flavor profiles of both ended up going really well together.

Overall we love Red Scooter Deli and will definitely be back for more of their delicious food. It’s just the perfect solution for that quick meal without having to sacrifice quality, and with so many options we know we’ll never get bored trying something new.

HISTORY

In 2010 owner Stephanie Johnston fulfilled her lifelong dream, and opened Red Scooter Deli in downtown Paso Robles.

The small deli soon blossomed, and became the staple of what great deli food should be on the central coast.

Stephanie also made a point of supporting her community in realizing her dream; she not only uses the fresh ingredients in her sandwiches grown on the central coast, she also sources almost all of her bread from local bakers. Places like Brian’s Bakery and Hush Harbor in Atascadero, and Edna’s in San Luis Obispo are the base for her amazing food, and allow us all to support the people we love with every bite.
