1865 Craft House is comfort food but with an elevated palate and aesthetic.

1865 Craft House - Exterior

They describe themselves as a “mom and pop style pub but with the consistency of a national chain”.

We were lucky enough to experience exactly what they mean when we visited the restaurant in May.

The menu at 1865 focuses on good food and drinks that most people would find in a mom and pop restaurant, but plays with the flavors, textures, and presentation to make the adventure of eating their food fun and new.

Their mantra of “Eat. Drink. Be Happy.” is present throughout the restaurant, and we definitely left happy after eating and drinking a delicious meal.

The Menu

Currently 1865 Craft House has a Dine-In Menu that features everything from burgers to sandwiches, salads, sides, and signature dishes, which is exactly what you would expect to find on a “mom and pop style pub” menu.

The big difference at 1865 from mom and pop are in the high-quality and elevated details.  You don’t just get fries with your burger for example, you can get beer battered truffle parmesan fries instead.  And your normal soft pretzel with cheese dip? Meet 1865’s Bavarian pretzel with Mexican-lager cheese fondue and stone-ground mustard.

When we visited our co-founder ordered the Prime Rib Dip Sliders, just like what you’d find on a mom and pop menu, and it again was the details that made the difference: the buns were unbelievably delicious, and it wasn’t just melted swiss cheese but swiss cheese straws on the slider.

Our other co-founder ordered the Mr. Ortega burger, which came with ortega chiles, guacamole, cotija, and fried green tomato.  The surprise here was the quality of the vegetarian option.

1865 Craft House sources Beyond Meat Patties for their vegetarian burgers, and if you haven’t had one you are missing out.  We’ve eaten a lot of vegetarian burgers in our past and Beyond Meat are truly the best on the market, and we were beyond surprised and pleased to be able to order one.

1865 also has a Sunday Brunch Menu that looks just as delicious, and those S’Mores Pancakes are at the top of our list to try when we visit again.

Drink Menu

1865 has a full bar and serves everything from beer and wine to craft cocktails.  The beer and wine list feature breweries and wineries from up and down the central coast, but the cocktails are what elevates their drink menu.

1865 Craft House - Unicorn Paloma

The Unicorn Paloma is a perfect example; at its core it is a margarita made with tequila, grapefruit juice, a large ice cube, and the glass is rimmed with salt.

The Unicorn Paloma, however, is made with Patron Silver tequila, ruby red grapefruit, a butterfly tea ice cube that starts blue and melts purple, pink and black salt to rim the class, and a bright green lime to top it off.

It literally looks like a unicorn in a glass, and will never be your basic margarita.

The same beers, wines, and cocktails are available during brunch, or you can splurge and order one of their Classic Mimosas with a strawberry; a Bloody Mary with bacon; or a Michelada with large shrimp.

1865 Craft House opened in May 2019 with the intention of “connecting the legacy of a local favorite with modern American cuisine”, which is obvious in every dish, drink, and the service they provide.

Chef Bernard Livingston, formerly of Vegetable Butcher and Libertine Brewing Company, has crafted a menu that brings all of your favorite flavors, textures, and ingredients together, but elevated in creative and delicious ways.

The restaurant is owned by restaurateur Brendan Searls (who also owns Viva Modern Mexican in Santa Barbara), Searls’ former GM for Viva, Jake Hildebrand, and Searls’ friend Brian Hill.
