The Willow Creek District is one of eleven sub-districts in the greater Paso Robles AVA, and is one of the most popular districts to visit with over 40 wineries calling the region home.
Located on the west side of Highway 101, Willow Creek sits between the Adelaida and Templeton Gap Districts with the cities of Paso Robles and Templeton directly to the East.
This geographic location allows the wineries that call Willow Creek home to benefit from many of the same characteristics that define the Adelaida and Templeton wine growing regions (such as the mountainous terrain and coastal weather influences), and produce some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Chardonnay varietals.
Today there are over 200 wineries in the larger Paso Robles AVA, and endless ways to experience the world class wines being crafted every day here on California’s Central Coast. WINE TASTING IN WILLOW CREEK DISTRICT

Willow Creek is one of the largest districts in Paso Robles’s AVA, and home to several wineries that are open to the public for wine tasting and events.
Its location at the base of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range provides locals and visitors stunning views of the surrounding landscape as you explore and enjoy the wines crafted in the region.
Wineries in the district are mostly found on Vineyard Drive and Highway 46, both very close to the cities of Paso Robles and Templeton where more tasting rooms, wine bars, and restaurants are located.

TERROIR PROFILE
Willow Creek District’s northern boarder is defined by the Santa Lucia Mountains, with the Salinas River to the East and Templeton Gap to the South.
Soil in this district consists of soft mineral shale, mudstones, and sandstone, and provides the distinct marker between this district and the next. While Willow Creek has much softer soil, the district below (Templeton Gap) sees a change in their soil to something more similar to the Monterey formation’s harder, alluvial bedrock.
Although the wineries in Willow Creek aren’t officially part of the Templeton Gap District, they are influenced by the Pacific Ocean, a trademark of Templeton Gap.
For the Willow Creek District, this translates into a much wetter growing period compared to other districts in the Paso Robles AVA, and longer ripening times given the cooler temperatures with harvests often occurring 2 – 3 weeks after most of the other districts in the region.
However, these cooler temperatures and wetter growing seasons provide the perfect climate to grow Rhone reds, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and even the white grape Viognier, all of which are strongly represented in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles’ Wine Country.

ABOUT THE PASO ROBLES AVA
Paso Robles’s AVA was established in 1983, and at the time encompassed approximately 614,000 acres across the cities of Paso Robles, Templeton, San Miguel Creston, Shandon, and Santa Margarita in northern SLO County.
At almost three times the size of Napa Valley’s AVA, Paso Robles remained the largest single AVA in California until 2014 when 11 sub-districts were established. Although the larger boundary did not change, these new districts provided a more nuanced understanding of the growing regions within the Paso Robles AVA, and the wines that could be successfully crafted.
Today the distinct terroir profiles (or growing conditions) of the eleven districts contribute to the production of over 40 varietals (the vast majority crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Roussanne, Zinfandel, Viognier, Merlot, and Syrah), and home to over 200 wineries for locals and tourists to enjoy and explore.
