Laboratories and Facilities

Students of the College of Engineering have access to world class, dedicated facilities that align directly with Cal Poly’s “learn by doing” philosophy, and provide ample opportunities for cross-disciplinary project activities, collaboration, and direct application of theory learned in the classroom.

There are six Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATLs) on campus that offer students the “tools of modern research”, which include:

  • NSF Advanced Transportation Laboratory for technology based highway design and traffic control
  • Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems Laboratory for research in aircraft control systems
  • Parsons Earthquake and Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory to study earthquakes and their impacts to the environment and structures
  • St. Jude Bio-Engineering Laboratory were students focus on medical instruments for clinical and commercial application
  • Litton Mechatronics Laboratory where students study products with mechanical and electronic components.
  • W.M. Keck Engineering Education Research and Development Center where students explore how to use technology to enhance their education.

In addition to the six ATLs, students of the college have access to:

  • Bonderson Projects Center, a 19,000 square-foot facility for individual and team based projects
  • R&D Hanger complete with state of the art manufacturing equipment
  • And Engineering IV, a 104,000 square-foot facility that houses the educational classrooms and additional workshop space for students of the college.
