HIKE OF THE MONTH

LAGOON TRAIL

The Lagoon Trail in Oceano, California, is a delightful gem for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a tranquil outdoor experience. Nestled near the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, this trail offers a serene environment that showcases the natural beauty of California’s Central Coast.

The Lagoon Trail is relatively short, extending for about 1.5 miles. It is well-suited for walkers, joggers, and those looking for a leisurely hike. The path meanders around the edge of a tranquil lagoon, providing picturesque views and a sense of peace away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The trail is mostly flat and well-maintained, making it accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels. It’s a great spot for families with children, as the walk is not too strenuous and there is plenty to see along the way.

Parking for the Lagoon Trail is convenient and ample. Visitors can park at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area’s entrance parking lot, which is located off Pier Avenue. From there, it’s just a short walk to the trailhead. There are signs directing visitors to the Lagoon Trail, ensuring that it is easy to find. Additionally, there are restroom facilities and picnic areas near the parking lot, which can be a perfect spot to relax before or after your walk.

The Lagoon Trail offers a diverse array of sights and sounds, making it a delightful spot for birdwatching and wildlife observation. The lagoon itself is home to various waterfowl, including ducks, herons, and egrets. In the surrounding marshlands, you might spot smaller birds such as sparrows, warblers, and finches. The vegetation around the lagoon is lush and varied, featuring native plants like coastal sagebrush, saltbush, and various wildflowers, especially vibrant in the spring.

Apart from birds, the trail sometimes offers glimpses of other wildlife. Rabbits and squirrels are common, and occasionally, you might spot a deer or two in the early morning or late afternoon. The lagoon also supports a healthy population of fish and amphibians, contributing to the area’s rich biodiversity.

Another aspect to be cautious of is the presence of mosquitoes, particularly in the warmer months. The lagoon’s still waters can be a breeding ground for these insects, so wearing long sleeves and using insect repellent can help make your experience more comfortable.

While the Lagoon Trail is generally safe and well-maintained, there are a few things to be mindful of. Firstly, it’s wise to wear sturdy, comfortable shoes, as some parts of the trail can be a bit uneven. Although the trail is short, bringing a bottle of water is always a good idea, especially on warmer days.

It’s also important to stay on the designated trail to protect the fragile ecosystem around the lagoon. Venturing off the path can disturb wildlife and damage the native plants. Additionally, while dogs are welcome on the trail, they should be kept on a leash to ensure they do not disrupt the local wildlife or other trail users.

Lastly, while the trail is generally quiet and serene, it’s always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and practice basic safety precautions, such as not hiking alone if you can avoid it and keeping an eye on any children in your group.

The Lagoon Trail in Oceano, CA, is a wonderful spot to immerse oneself in nature. With its easy accessibility, scenic views, and rich wildlife, it offers a perfect escape for anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher, a family with young children, or someone simply looking for a peaceful walk, the Lagoon Trail has something to offer. Just remember to respect the environment and come prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

WINERY OF THE MONTH

CASS

CASS Winery in Paso Robles, CA:
A Rich Tapestry of Viticulture and Hospitality

CASS Winery, nestled in the heart of Paso Robles, California, is a testament to the region’s vibrant winemaking heritage. Founded in 2000 by Steve Cass and Ted Plemons, the winery has grown from a shared vision into a celebrated institution within the Paso Robles AVA. Their journey began with a passion for producing world-class wines that reflect the unique terroir of the area.

The story of CASS Winery is rooted in a serendipitous partnership. Steve Cass, a former telecommunications executive, and Ted Plemons, a seasoned builder, combined their skills and passions to create a winery that would showcase the best of Paso Robles. They purchased 145 acres of land in the Geneseo District of Paso Robles, an area known for its rolling hills and ideal grape-growing conditions. The winery’s first vintage was produced in 2005, and since then, CASS has garnered numerous accolades and a loyal following.

CASS Winery is situated in the Geneseo District, a sub-AVA of Paso Robles known for its calcareous soils and a climate that provides a long growing season. The estate vineyards are planted with a variety of Rhône and Bordeaux varietals, including Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. These varietals thrive in the warm, dry climate of Paso Robles, benefiting from the significant diurnal temperature variation which helps to develop complex flavors and balanced acidity.

The Paso Robles American Viticultural Area (AVA) is one of California’s most dynamic wine regions. Established in 1983, it has grown to encompass over 40,000 vineyard acres and more than 200 wineries. The AVA is characterized by diverse microclimates and soil types, ranging from cool, coastal influences in the west to warmer, inland conditions in the east. This diversity allows for the cultivation of a wide array of grape varieties, making Paso Robles a hub for innovative and high-quality winemaking.

The winemaking philosophy at CASS focuses on sustainable farming practices and minimal intervention in the winery. By nurturing the vines and respecting the natural processes, the team at CASS aims to produce wines that are a true expression of their terroir. The winery employs modern techniques alongside traditional methods to create wines that are both innovative and rooted in classic styles.

CASS Winery offers a diverse portfolio of wines that cater to a wide range of palates. Their flagship wines include the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the GSM blend (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre), both of which showcase the depth and complexity of the Paso Robles terroir. In addition to these, CASS produces single-varietal wines like Viognier, Roussanne, and Petit Verdot, as well as limited-edition and reserve wines that highlight the best barrels of each vintage.

The winery is not just a destination for wine lovers but also for food enthusiasts. The on-site deli at CASS Winery offers a selection of gourmet sandwiches, salads, and charcuterie boards, all designed to complement the wines. The deli emphasizes fresh, locally sourced ingredients, providing a farm-to-table experience that enhances the wine tasting journey. Guests can enjoy their meals in the picturesque outdoor seating area, surrounded by the vineyards.

Camp CASS is an immersive experience offered by the winery, designed to educate and entertain guests. It includes activities like vineyard tours, blending sessions, and wine education classes. Participants can learn about the viticulture practices, the intricacies of winemaking, and even try their hand at blending their own wines. Camp CASS aims to deepen the appreciation for wine and provide a hands-on understanding of the processes involved.

CASS Winery stands as a shining example of the potential of the Paso Robles AVA. Through a commitment to quality, sustainability, and hospitality, CASS has carved out a unique place in the wine world, offering visitors not just exceptional wines, but also memorable experiences.
